چکیده

The polarization of the optical afterglow (AG) of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) has only been measured in a few instances at various times after the GRB. In all cases except the best measured one (GRB 030329) the observed polarization and its evolution are simple and easy to explain in the most naive version of the “Cannonball” model of GRBs: the “intrinsic” AG polarization is small and the observations reflect the “foreground” effects of the host galaxy and ours. The polarization observed in GRB 030329 behaves chaotically, its understanding requires reasonable but ad-hoc ingredients. The polarization of the γ-rays of a GRB has only been measured in the case of GRB 021206. The result is debated, but similar measurements would be crucial to the determination of the GRBgenerating mechanism.

Gamma-Ray Bursts: Polarization of Afterglows from Two-Component Jets

Polarization behaviors of optical afterglows from two-component gamma-ray burst jets are investigated, assuming various configurations for the two components. In most cases, the observed polarization is dominated by the inner narrow component for a long period. Interestingly, it is revealed that different assumptions about the lateral expansion of the jet can lead to different evolutions of the...

Snapshot Identification of Gamma Ray Burst Optical Afterglows

Gamma ray burst afterglows can be identified in single epoch observations using three or more optical filters. This method relies on color measurements to distinguish the power law spectrum of an afterglow from the curved spectra of stars. Observations in a fourth filter will further distinguish between afterglows and most galaxies up to redshifts z ≈ 1. By allowing faster identification of opt...

Evolution of the polarization of the optical afterglow of the gamma-ray burst GRB030329.

The association of a supernova with GRB030329 strongly supports the 'collapsar' model of gamma-ray bursts, where a relativistic jet forms after the progenitor star collapses. Such jets cannot be spatially resolved because gamma-ray bursts lie at cosmological distances; their existence is instead inferred from 'breaks' in the light curves of the afterglows, and from the theoretical desire to red...

Testing the Fireball/blastwave Model by Monitoring Afterglows from Soft Gamma Repeaters

The popular fireball/blastwave model of classical γ-ray bursts is applied to soft γ-ray bursts. It is found that X-ray afterglows from strong events may be above their quiescent levels for 40 − 400 seconds. Optical afterglows may also be detectable. By monitoring the three repeaters, we will have an ideal way to check the fireball/blastwave model.

Polarization in the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts and their afterglows

Synchrotron is considered the dominant emission mechanism in the production of gamma-ray burst photons in the prompt as well as in the afterglow phase. Polarization is a characteristic feature of synchrotron and its study can give a wealth of information on the properties of the magnetic field and of the energy distribution in gamma-ray burst jets. In this paper I will review the theory and obs...
